HONOR ALYSSA

October 14, 2026, marks two years since Dr. Alyssa Dawn Lokits was murdered.

We think of her every day and miss her always; the grief is now a daily part of our lives. But the weight of this week will always carry an indescribable heaviness. 

Community is what Alyssa valued in her remarkable life, and community is what held us together after her passing. So for the two year anniversary, we're asking our community to gather and honor her, together.

As part of our Free to Move community, you're invited to join us with daily action throughout the week.

Monday, Oct. 12: We Move.

Alyssa was tragically murdered on a Monday, in broad daylight, on a well-populated trail in Nashville, TN. Movement reminds us that public spaces belong to all of us. Let’s fill greenways across the nation in her honor. Grab a friend. Share it and tag us on social #HonorAlyssa

Tuesday, Oct. 13: We Speak Up.

We cannot affect change alone. Our vision of creating a safer world is only possible when change makers unite with us in the pursuit. Use our template to email your state legislator and advocate for policy change that would create safer spaces for everyone through the Alyssa Lokits Safety Act in 2027. Personalize it, send it, and add your voice to a growing movement.

Wednesday, Oct. 14: We Remember.

Alyssa was killed in a senseless act of violence two years ago, today. Our lives will never be the same. Today, remember her and those left in her absence. In your outdoor movement, think of Alyssa. Pray for her loved ones. Breathe in the fresh outdoors. Move freely in her honor.

Thursday, Oct. 15: We Support.

Free to Move was founded as a legacy, but along the journey, we learned that we are filling a gap that no other non-profit stands in. That's why we are still here. It’s incredibly meaningful work that we can only continue because of generous donors. Consider supporting us with a financial gift.

Friday, Oct. 16: We Learn.

We believe safety resources should be free and accessible to everyone, that is why ours will always be totally free of charge. Learn with us and equip yourself with the tools you need to move safer and more confidently, wherever and however you move.
