While we are grateful for the pursuit of justice this week, nothing will ever make up for the loss of Alyssa Dawn Lokits—daughter, sister and friend. She was remarkable in every sense of the word. Daily her memory and absence floods our thoughts. The hole left in our hearts and in our family is immeasurable.
We would like to express our gratitude to the witnesses testifying this week, the MNPD for their dedication and professionalism from the beginning, and the greater Nashville community for their overwhelming support for nearly two years since Alyssa’s murder.
As our family continues through this incredibly painful experience, we ask for your support through prayers and action. Choose to carry her legacy forward: live bravely and love fiercely. Say her name and share her story. By doing these things, we can honor Alyssa.

On October 14, 2024, Alyssa Dawn Lokits was tragically murdered on a greenway in Nashville, TN. On August 10, 2026, her trial begins.
The Alyssa Lokits trial represents more than the pursuit of justice for one innocent life. This trial is a moment for all to pause and consider how we can work together to create a world in which women can be safe and free to move without fear.
Alyssa was an extraordinary person. The world was better because of her presence. Free to Move was created for her, for this community, and for the loved ones left in the wake of unimaginable tragedy. It has given purpose in the midst of pain, and hope through our heartbreak. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has joined us along the way.
We will never move on from the loss of Alyssa. We choose to move forward, carrying her legacy with us. Free to Move was modeled after her: we honor her through research, because she loved to learn; education, because she taught others by how she lived; and advocacy, because she fiercely protected the ones she loved and those who needed a voice.
As her loved ones walk through an incredibly painful week, we ask you to support us with thoughts and prayers, but also with action. Honor Alyssa this week by joining us daily in research, education, advocacy, or simply moving outdoors bravely, without fear.
